To use a remote machine for ProMAX/other UNIX work:

1) In a terminal window run "slogin remotehost" where "remotehost" is the
name of another machine in the department (list below).

2) Respond to any prompts to accept host keys and/or enter a password

3) On the remote host execute the "spmxmcs" command

The slogin command will automatically setup "DISPLAY" and "xhost" unless
these features are overridden by the user in their configuration files.*

Machines which can be used for remote execution include (remotehost):

centroid
brutus
ponca
volt
nabla
star
lgco
mking
ross

or any of the Suns in the building sitting in people's offices.

As a quick example:

climate.geosc.psu.edu:testor[67]% slogin brutus
testor@brutus's password:
Last login: Tue Sep 16 15:23:04 2003 from climate.geosc.p Sun Microsystems
Inc. SunOS 5.8 Generic February 2000 Sun Microsystems Inc. SunOS 5.8
brutus:testor[67]% echo $DISPLAY
localhost:11.0
brutus:testor[68]% spmxmcs

* In the event that DISPLAY and xhost are not automatically configured by
slogin the student can set them manually:

1) On the local host in a terminal type "xhost +remotehost" where
remotehost is the name of the host your will be logging into.

2) slogin remotehost

3) setenv DISPLAY hostname:0.0 where hostname is the name of the host you
are logging in from (the local host).
