GeoSystems students work as part of a fully integrated research team. Each team:

  • is composed of a petroleum engineer, a geologist, a geophysicist, and a petrophysicist.
  • takes common, cross-training, and disciplinary depth courses.
  • shares common office and lab space.
  • interns in the petroleum industry.
  • uses state of the art resources to pursue individual research theses on an offshore Gulf of Mexico oil field.

The GeoSystems Initiative strives to keep core strengths and build cross-disciplinary knowledge and teamwork skills. Petroleum engineers will graduate with an M.S. in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering from the Department of Energy and GeoEnvironmental Engineering. Geophysicists, petrophysicists and geologists will graduate with an M.S. from the Department of Geosciences.

Students accepted into the Initiative receive two-year, industry-sponsored fellowships that fully cover tuition and stipend. In addition, during the summer following their first year of study they also work a paid internship in the petroleum industry.
