ProMAX Header Problem

8/24/00

When loading the raw, pre-stack seismic data for EWING 9009 Line 1002 into ProMAX,
the shot and channel numbers are not read in correctly. When I look at the header data,
it appears that they do not follow the standard byte locations for shot, field ID, cdp, or channel.
This could be related to the first trace being a null file.

I contacted ProMAX support and explained the situation to Carl Elliott (a support representative).
Carl and I went through a few test reads in ProMAX and could not solve the problem.
I then placed a file on the Landmark public ftp site so Carl could work on the problem locally.
He informed me that one potential solution would be to edit the SEG-Y data to remove the initial null trace.

Carl responds with this message/solution...

Brandon,

I was able to use a "dd" script to strip off the offending 2048 byte
ASCII traces which were preventing SEG-Y Input from reading the data you
sent (ie. tape_31.dat).

I have attached the "dd_copy3" script so you can see what I did. The script
basically created 99 files...carl001 thru carl099 in the directory from
which it ran. These files consisted of the SEG-Y header and 98 "stripped"
shots. I then use a CAT command "cat carl* > tape001.dat" to concatenate all
the shots into a new "disk image" file which you should be able to read
directly into ProMAX SEG-Y Input.

GOOD LUCK...I hope this helps!!

Carl Elliott

I performed a test run with the script and this approach and the data were loaded with the correct
shot and channel numbers.

I used the the approach above to fix the majority of the EWING data and they are now read in
correctly. Ten data tapes have yet to be loaded because they have not been loaded into the system.

The last 10 data tapes have been loaded into our disk space and are in slightly different format as
they were bad tapes that were reread and reformated by Mike Waller at Conoco. I need to work with
Carl's script to modify it for the new format to load these last ten tapes.
